The menopause occurs at about 50 years and is caused by low oestrogen levels.
During the reproductive years the ovaries produce eggs each month and the growing egg releases oestrogen into the bloodstream. Oestrogen has a positive effect on skin, collagen, bones, mood, energy and sexuality.
The symptoms of the menopause are hot flushes, insomnia, dry skin, tiredness, loss of libido or sex drive and bad moods.
Many women get through the menopause by maintaining good health with diet, exercise and reduction in stress. Some women, however, find this a very difficult few years and welcome the chance to discuss options of management.
If you would like further help and an opportunity to discuss your symptoms please make an appointment.
We can offer counselling and investigations if needed with blood tests and/or a scan. We can advise on different approaches to management of the menopause and we can prescribe HRT (hormone replacement therapy) for those who wish it or who we think will benefit from it.
We can discuss the pros and cons of HRT as well as diet and a healthy lifestyle.
